74% Of Small Businesses Already Use AI — But 78% Don’t Fully Trust It

A new survey of 942 U.S. small business owners finds AI adoption charging ahead even as trust lags behind. 74% now use or actively test AI tools, and 68% believe AI advances will benefit their business over the next few years.

But the same survey found 78% don’t fully trust AI to handle even simple tasks without a person checking the output, and 82% report at least one real barrier to going deeper — led by data security worries (33%, up 10 points in a year) and doubts about accuracy (31%).

The businesses actually seeing returns aren’t the ones betting everything on AI. 52% report positive ROI, and 48% save 4+ hours a week — but the winners started narrow: 37% use AI specifically for marketing and sales tasks, not the whole operation.

Bottom Line

Don’t try to “add AI” to your whole business at once. Pick one repetitive task — responding to Google reviews, sorting inbound leads, or writing follow-up texts — where you can measure hours saved within 30 days, get it working well, then expand.

$80 Billion In Tariff Refunds Is Stuck — And The Reason Is Embarrassingly Simple

U.S. Customs has repaid $86.3 billion in tariff refunds as of July 10 — $49.1 billion of it in June alone — out of a $166 billion pool. But roughly $80 billion is still unpaid, and large importers are getting paid first while smaller businesses wait.

The single biggest bottleneck isn’t legal, it’s banking: 8,384 already-approved refund declarations have no valid banking information on file — the #1 reason approved money isn’t landing in accounts.

There’s also a closing window: the protest period for “finally liquidated” entries opens Phase 3 in late July — miss it, and that refund path closes.

If you’ve filed for a tariff refund, log into the ACE portal today and verify your routing and account numbers — don’t assume “approved” means “paid.” Run a CAPE Refunds Trade Report before the Phase 3 window closes.

Oil Just Jumped 14% In A Week — Here’s What It Means If You Run Trucks Or Vans

WTI crude is trading around $81–82 a barrel, after climbing more than 14% over the past week as U.S.–Iran hostilities escalated near the Strait of Hormuz — Kuwait reported an Iranian strike on a desalination and power plant on July 17, and prices are only just easing today (July 20) after Iran signaled openness to talks.

This is the third spike-and-partial-reverse cycle since late June, and each round has landed higher than the last. Diesel and gas prices at the pump tend to follow crude with a 1–2 week lag — if you run a fleet, the cost is still working its way to you.

The driver is entirely geopolitical, not supply-and-demand — which means it can reverse as fast as it rose if talks hold, but can also spike again just as fast if they don’t.

Bottom Line

If fuel is a real line item for you — trucks, vans, delivery, mowers — don’t wait to see where this settles. Check that your coverage actually reflects your current fleet and mileage before a claim, not after.
