Breaking · Washington
| The Fed held rates this week — and for the first time signaled the next move could be up. On June 17, the Federal Reserve kept its benchmark rate at 3.5%–3.75% in a unanimous vote — Kevin Warsh's first meeting as chairman. The bigger news was the forecast: the median policymaker now pencils in a year-end rate of 3.8%, up from 3.4% in March — and almost half of officials expect at least one rate hike in 2026. Translation for your business: the era of waiting for cheaper money is over. If you've been holding off on a truck, equipment, or expansion loan hoping rates drop, that bet just got riskier. Inflation is still running above the Fed's 2% target, partly from the energy spike (see section 03).

“Economic activity is expanding at a solid pace despite elevated uncertainty … inflation remains elevated relative to our 2 percent goal.”
— Federal Reserve FOMC statement, June 17, 2026

The Bottom Line
If you need financing in the next 12 months, lock a fixed rate now rather than betting on cuts that may not come. Call your lender this week and ask what a fixed-rate term loan looks like before any October move — and revisit any variable-rate balance you're carrying.

Policy · Hiring
| That $100,000 H-1B fee? A judge called it unlawful — then hit pause. It's still in effect. A federal court in Massachusetts ruled on June 8 that the new $100,000 fee on qualifying H-1B petitions was unlawful. Four days later, on June 12, the same court stayed its own ruling while the government appeals. Bottom line: USCIS is still collecting the fee, and employers should assume it applies. Even if you don't sponsor H-1Bs, the enforcement climate around hiring is tightening fast — and it lands hardest on immigrant-owned businesses. Here's what's moving right now:
| 💰 |
$100K H-1B fee stands for now — budget for it if you're hiring skilled foreign talent this cycle. |
| 🏫 |
$70B ICE & Border funding cleared the Senate this week and heads to the House — expect more worksite activity. |
| 📝 |
287(g) agreements hit 1,987 across 39 states — local police in more counties can now act on immigration. |
| 📋 |
I-9 audits are rising — clean paperwork is your cheapest insurance. |
|
The Bottom Line
Pull your I-9 file this week and confirm every active employee has a complete, correct form on record. If you use 1099 contractors, double-check the classification — misclassification is the easiest thing for an auditor to find and the most expensive to fix.

Global · Energy
| The Strait of Hormuz shock is still in your fuel bill — and it's not going back to last year's prices. After the Strait of Hormuz closure in March, Brent crude surged past $120 a barrel. It has cooled since — averaging $107 in May as stockpiles were released — but diesel, jet fuel and propane stayed elevated. The World Bank projects energy prices up 24% in 2026, the biggest jump since 2022. If your business burns fuel — landscaping, trucking, food delivery, mobile services — this is a direct hit to your margin. Diesel costs roughly doubled at the peak, and the surcharges your suppliers added aren't coming off quickly.

|
The Bottom Line
Build a fuel surcharge line into every quote you send this summer rather than eating the cost silently. A simple 3–6% fuel adjustment, clearly labeled, protects your margin and is something customers already understand from every delivery they receive.
