Counterintuitive · The Fed
| The Fed just told you cheap money isn't coming back this year On June 17 the Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.50%–3.75% — the fourth straight hold, and the first decision under new Chair Kevin Warsh. The news isn't the hold. It's that the Fed erased the rate cut it had previously penciled in for 2026 and pushed any reductions out to 2027–2028. The updated dot plot now leans the other way: the median official sees no cut this year, and nearly half project a rate hike before year-end — markets are pricing one 25-basis-point increase by October. The driver is an inflation spike tied to the Iran conflict and energy costs. Meanwhile the ground-level data is steadier than the headlines: average real monthly revenue at US small businesses rose 3.34% to $51,080 in May, even as small-business payrolls slipped by about 8,700 jobs.

Next move markets expect: a hike
|
|
The Bottom Line
If you've been waiting for rates to fall before financing a truck, a second crew, or new equipment — stop waiting. A hike, not a cut, is now the base case through October. Call your lender this week and price out a fixed-rate term before your next big purchase, so a rate increase can't move your payment.

Breaking · Washington
| A new SBA rule just shut green-card holders out of small-business loans Since March 1, 2026, every direct and indirect owner of a business applying for SBA financing must be a U.S. citizen or U.S. national — and must keep their primary residence inside the U.S. or its territories. Lawful permanent residents (green-card holders) are now excluded entirely. This is a hard line: even a 1% ownership stake held by a green-card holder disqualifies the whole application. The old rule allowed up to 5% foreign ownership. As of April 1 the same requirement extends to SBA microloans and the Surety Bond Guarantee program. There is one piece of good news for owners who do qualify: effective July 4, eligible borrowers can combine 7(a) and 504 loans for up to $10 million in SBA-backed financing, double the old $5 million cap.
|
“Even a 1% ownership stake held by a green-card holder will disqualify the business.”
— SBA Standard Operating Procedure, effective March 1, 2026
|
| ⛔ |
Who's locked out: any business with even partial LPR ownership, plus owners whose main home is abroad. |
| 📉 |
What changed: the prior 5% foreign-ownership allowance is gone — it's now 100% citizen/national or nothing. |
| 🪜 |
Workarounds to ask about: conventional bank loans, CDFI and community lenders, or restructuring ownership before you file. |
|
|
The Bottom Line
If you're a green-card holder — or you have a partner who is, even with a sliver of equity — do not file a 7(a) assuming the old 5% rule still applies; it doesn't. Talk to an SBA-experienced lender or an immigration attorney this month about conventional or CDFI financing, or whether restructuring ownership is realistic before you apply.

Energy · Strait of Hormuz
| Oil is back near pre-war prices — but Sunday's strikes put your fuel bill back in play Brent crude was trading around $72 a barrel at the start of this week (June 29), up modestly but whipsawing. Days earlier it hit a four-month low as Persian Gulf exports recovered to roughly 75% of prewar levels and tankers resumed transit through the Strait of Hormuz. Then the picture flipped: early Sunday, U.S. Central Command struck 10 Iranian targets near the Strait after a drone hit a crude tanker — reintroducing the supply risk the market had just priced out. For context, Brent peaked above $126 in March; today it's roughly half that. For anyone burning diesel or gas — trades, delivery, landscaping, cleaning crews on the road — the trend is your friend right now, but it's fragile. A single tanker incident can reverse it overnight.

|
The Bottom Line
Fuel is cheaper than it's been in months — use the window, but don't bake in a spring spike that's already gone. If you quote fuel surcharges to customers, reset them on today's lower number and revisit weekly. If you buy in bulk, this dip is a reasonable time to top off — just don't lock in long if a Hormuz headline could spike prices again.
